China has announced that from December 1, 2018, only playmats with China Compulsory Certification (CCC) can be offered onto the Chinese market. The pronouncement was made by China’s Certification and Accreditation Administration (CNCA) on December 8, 2017, in notice, No. 41 of 2017.
Under the terms of this announcement, playmats are defined as:

- Products labeled that they comply with relevant parts of the standard GB 6675
Products that are not labeled with information in point 1 and 2, but
intended for children under 14 years of age and have at least one of the

- A mat illustrated with a cartoon image or with learning elements, such as pictures/illustrations helping children to learn about characters, animals or colors, and which can be used as a mat for playing and crawling
Certification is achieved through Approved Bodies. A sample must be sent for safety tests conducted against the relevant harmonized standard; for toys, the main standard is GB 6675. Once certification has been given, the product must be labeled with the CCC mark.
Manufacturers and suppliers of playmats should now ensure their products are compliant with the requirements for CCC before the transition period elapses on November 30, 2018.
